Terms of Use
Last updated 14 July 2026
By using speedofbits.com you agree to these terms. They are short, because the service is simple: it measures your internet connection and shows you the result.
The service
Speed of Bits is a free tool that estimates your download speed, upload speed and latency. It is provided for personal, informational use. No account is required and nothing is installed on your device.
Results are estimates, not guarantees
A speed test measures one connection, to one server, at one moment. The figure it produces is affected by your Wi-Fi, your router, your device, other traffic on your network, congestion on the wider internet, and the distance to the measuring server. Results will vary between runs and between different speed tests, and that is normal.
Nothing shown on this site should be treated as an authoritative measurement of the service your internet provider delivers, nor as evidence in a formal dispute. If you need an authoritative measurement, ask your provider or your national telecom regulator for their approved method.
Information shown about your connection
The service displays your public IP address, your internet service provider, and an approximate city-level location. This information is retrieved by your browser from a third-party measurement network and is shown to you for informational purposes only.
Two limitations you should be aware of:
- It may be wrong. Geolocation of IP addresses is an estimate derived from public registries. It is frequently inaccurate by tens or even hundreds of kilometres, and provider names are reported as registered network operators, which may differ from the brand name you pay your bill to. Do not rely on it for anything that matters.
- It may not be yours. If you use a VPN, a proxy, a corporate network, or mobile carrier-grade NAT, the address shown belongs to that intermediary, not to your own connection.
Your IP address is masked on screen by default and is only revealed if you choose to reveal it. We do not collect, log, or store it. See the Privacy Policy for detail.
Data usage
The test works by transferring real data — typically several hundred megabytes across a full run on a fast connection. If you are on a metered or capped connection, such as a mobile data plan, running this test will consume part of your allowance. You are responsible for any charges your provider applies. Consider this before testing repeatedly on mobile data.
Locally stored history
The service saves your recent test results in your browser's local storage so that you can see how your connection changes over time. This data stays on your device, is never transmitted to us, and can be erased at any time using the clear control on the page or by clearing your browser's site data. We accept no responsibility for its loss, which can happen for ordinary reasons such as clearing your browser, using private browsing, or switching device.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use automated tools to run the test at a volume that degrades the service for others.
- Attempt to disrupt, overload, or gain unauthorised access to the site or its infrastructure.
- Copy, resell, or present the service as your own.
Third-party measurement
Measurements are performed against a third-party network. Its availability is outside our control, and the service may be interrupted or discontinued without notice.
No warranty
The service is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that it will be accurate, uninterrupted, or error-free.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Speed of Bits is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the service, including decisions you make on the basis of a result it shows you, or data charges you incur while running it.
Changes
These terms may be updated. Continued use after a change means you accept the revised terms.
